“The motel looks seedy.”

  , Somewhere In Wa
Every hotel, inn and motel in the University district was either fully booked or had significantly raised their prices in anticipation of the "Apple Cup" on November 29th. This Travelodge had room, and even its rates were elevated, particularly for this branch of the chain which looks badly in need of a make-over. For travelers in search of a 50s/60s-era motel, this is the place. But the jail-like check-in desk (I have never been to a jail, but this is how I imagine one to be) filthy windows on the ground floor between Reception and the door into the premises might give one pause. Then the unattractive muddy-coloured carpeting inside, and two flights of stairs to the second floor (no elevator) do not a welcoming ambience make. Once inside the double queen-bedded room, we decided to boil some water in the micro-wave in order to make some tea. But what to use to hold water? The wrapped plastic cups were clearly marked "Not safe to micro-wave," so we went down-stairs to inquire if the receptionist had some ceramic or glass mugs on hand? She had not, and suggested the same plastic cups, until we drew her attention to the warning. My husband then went to the Starbucks across the street and obtained two paper drinks cups, and voila, we were finally able to make tea. Later, when we tried to turn on the t.v. there was no remote. We called down to Reception to ask for one. The Receptionist, who was alone on duty, eventually brought a remote. After dinner at a nearby eatery, I thought it would be lovely to have a relaxing bath. One look at the ground-in black marks in the ridged surface at the bottom of the tub disabused me of that idea. I hesitated to even step into the tub and placed a hand-towel under my feet before turning on the shower. The air-conditioning/heat is positioned right beside the heads of the beds, which means that hot or cold air blows right at those actually in the beds. In spite of all the fore-going, the beds themselves were fabulously comfortable, and this, combined with the Receptionist's pleasant and helpful attitude are the only reasons this establishment is given three stars. It looks like the owners make no non-discretionary expenditures on it, perhaps they are biding their time, hoping some developer will come along and offer them a fortune for their large lot on which condos can be erected, situated as it is, across the street from the up-scale University Village shopping centre.
