“Room without heat”

I booked this room online. I checked in just before 5pm and found that the temperature in the room was 12C, and the heat/airconditioning unit was blowing cold air. Nothing I did would stop it from blowing cold air, let alone generate heat. The front desk sent someone up to have a look at the unit, but (like me) was unable to get the unit to provide heat and informed that since the maintenance staff had left for the day, he would either find me another suitable room or provide a heater which, he said, would work as well as the building heating system. He also suggested I leave the door to the hall open to warm up the room; however, as I informed him, I would not feel comfortable in the room with the door open! I had to leave for a dinner engagement at 5:30pm, and the hotel, having been unable to find an alternate room for me, had put a small heater in the room. When I arrived back at the room at about 8:15pm, the room temperature was 17C - certainly an improvement, but not at all warm enough to be comfortable. It was not until after midnight that the room finally reached the temperature of 19C. Needless to say, this room did not provide the basic comforts that should be provided by a hotel, let alone one that charges $200 per night (nor, I expect, does it even comply with health and safety requirements). This is the worst hotel room I have ever had the displeasure of staying in. The staff seemed to be totally indifferent to the unacceptable quality of the service that I received! I am also astonished that the hotel staff were not aware in advance of the lack of heat in the room and that they should never have put me in that room in the first place. I think that I may have ended up with the room just because they had a reservation they needed to honor but had already rented out all of the suitable rooms (i.e. the ones that were actuall heated).
