“Beware non-refundable hotel bookings”

  , Atlanta
I was in town for a memorial service, so I had more weighty things on my mind at the time than complaining about a run-down Travelodge in Silver Spring, MD. First, the "good". The front desk person was nice. The bed was ok. Parking was free. Now the rest. The peep-hole in the door had a tissue stuffed in the eye hole from the inside of the room. That made me wonder. When I opened the room safe, it fell to the ground because it had been ripped out of the wall and was just leaning on the back of the closet. The weight of the door put it off balance. I do think the safe worked, but since anyone could carry it out of the room, I decided to not use it for securing my valuables. The reception on the tv was mostly horrible. (I didn't try the wi-fi.) Of the three lights in the room, one worked, one had no light bulb, and I discovered the one on the desk wasn't plugged in after looking in vain for a switch to turn it on. Meanwhile, the hot and cold water was hooked up backwards on the sink (but the light did work there) and the shower handle in the bath tub looked like it had once fallen off and would do so again (it didn't). The soap in the bathroom was exposed through a hole in one corner of the paper wrapping, looking very much like a small rodent had sampled the Jojoba Moisturizing Bath Soap (by San Francisco Soap Company®) and decided it wasn't as tasty as it initially thought. (Some of the soap really was gone.) Attributing this to a rodent isn't a stretch of the imagination, given the gauntlet of trash I had to pass through to get up the stairs closest to my second floor room. Really, it was hard to get by the trash can and the piles of cardboard, all next to the wooden enclosure where most of the trash went. I told my friends that the hotel was "one to write home about." It was bad enough that I took many pictures of my room and the surroundings. Like the title of this review suggests, if the prepaid reservation had been refundable, I would have made time to look for another place to stay for the second night. Like so many things in life, this is an experience I hope to never repeat.
